Writing a News Story

  • Hard news starts with the 5 w's
  • Hard news slams the reader with all of the facts right away and then elaborates later
  • Soft news is often on people or organizations and gets more in depth
  • A feature takes a step back from hard news and gets more in depth
  • A editorial is an oppinion article that gives you a chance to express how you feel about a topic
  • A lead is like a topic sentence and in hard news it is the five w's
  • In a hard news story you CANNOT use your opinion, only in soft news or an editorial.
  • Think about the five senses, you want to make the reader feel like they are there.

  1. Find a topic
  2. Find an angle
  3. Collect data, information
  4. Gather interviews
  5. Write the Story
  6. Edit/Revise/Proofread
